Update on 03-05-12 Incident at JFK
Published on Mar 6, 2012 10:24

Dear Parent and Guardian,

Classes resumed without incident this morning at Kennedy Middle School following yesterdays school lockdown as the result of an envelope containing a white powder. The substance is being tested. Results are expected in approximately one week.

In checking this morning with the Enfield Police Department there is nothing new to report and the investigation is continuing. Based on news stories on the Internet we know that a number of institutions and schools in multiple states received letters yesterday with a white powder via U.S. Mail. The FBI is investigating those mailings.

Our primary goal yesterday was keeping the students and staff at Kennedy Middle School safe. We realize the incident inconvenienced many students and parents in grades PK through grade 8. We trust everyone understands that safety took precedence over bus times yesterday.

A number of parents informed us that they did not know about the incident until they saw it on local TV.  As a point of information the Kennedy Middle School placed a message on their website, three messages were placed on the Boards webpage, three audio messages were made to the District Snow Line, two messages went out on Q-Notify, two messages went out on Sharp School, and four messages went out on the Towns Everbridge notification system.  We encourage you to visit www.enfieldschools.org and sign up for one, or all, of the electronic message systems available if you have not already done so.

Finally, we extend our appreciation to the first responders, the school staff, the JFK students, Smyth Bus drivers, and the school administration for their calmness and decisive actions in dealing with this incident. We will post the lab results upon notification. Hopefully the FBI will find the person(s) responsible for yesterdays mailings and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

Sincerely,

John Gallacher, Ph.D.

Superintendent of Schools
